FAQ: Is My Jian Zhan Authentic? The Complete Answer
It is the question every new collector asks, and too often the answer is vague. Here is the complete, no-nonsense answer: authentic Jian Zhan can be verified with four physical tests you can perform at home.
Test 1 — Weight
A genuine iron-clay Jian Zhan is noticeably heavier than a porcelain cup of the same size. If your cup feels light, thin, and delicate, it is likely industrial clay with a sprayed-on dark glaze.
Test 2 — The Unglazed Foot
Flip the cup over. The lower third and foot ring should be unglazed, showing raw iron-rich clay — reddish-brown to charcoal, matte and slightly rough. If the entire cup including the bottom is glossy, it was mold-cast, not hand-finished.
Test 3 — Dimensional Crystals
Run your fingernail across the oil spots. On a genuine piece, the crystals sit above the dark ground — three-dimensional, catching light from the side. Fake spots are flat, printed, or chemically stained.
Test 4 — The Tea Taste
Brew the same tea in your cup and in an ordinary mug. Wait two minutes. Sip both. The genuine Jian Zhan's iron body softens the water, rounding out bitterness. A fake tastes identical to a regular mug.
If your piece passes all four, it is authentic. If any test fails, you may own a factory imitation. Every Porcelainess piece passes all four — and we back that with a 30-day guarantee. Read the full authentication guide →
