Short answer: yes, genuine Jian Zhan is food safe. Authentic Jian Zhan glazes are compounded from natural mineral ores and wood ash — with no lead or cadmium pigments — and fired at 1300°C to a fully vitrified (glassy) surface that cannot leach metals into tea.

Why Food Safety Depends on Firing Temperature

A glaze becomes food safe when it is fully vitrified — fused into a non-porous glass layer. Low-fire ceramics (under 1100°C) can remain porous and leach metals. Genuine Jian Zhan is fired at 1300°C, which fully seals the surface. This high-temperature vitrification is inherently safer than most mass-produced low-fire ware.

What About the Iron Content?

Iron is the active mineral in Jian Zhan — and it is not a heavy-metal hazard. Trace iron in tea is nutritionally neutral to beneficial. The iron is what gives the cup its water-softening effect and its dark glaze. There is no toxicology concern.
