Jingdezhen began as a small ceramic trading town and rose to prominence during the Song dynasty, when Emperor Zhenzong ordered the creation of porcelain stamped with the era name 'Jingde.' The town grew to a city of hundreds of thousands — its entire economy devoted to ceramics, its kilns numbering in the thousands.

The Imperial Kilns

By the Ming dynasty, Jingdezhen hosted the official imperial kilns, producing exclusively for the court. The standard was absolute perfection: any piece with the slightest flaw was destroyed. This obsessive quality culture created the techniques and standards that still define fine porcelain today — and it's why 'Jingdezhen ware' carries an automatic premium in every market.
