In an oxidation kiln, oxygen flows freely through the chamber. The iron in the clay and glaze reacts with that abundant oxygen and stays in its stable, oxidized state — producing predictable browns, reds, and cream colors. This is why mass-produced 'earthenware' mugs have uniform, even tones: the process is chemically reliable, batch after batch.

Why Industry Loves It

Oxidation firing is fast, fuel-efficient, and consistent. A factory can fire thousands of identical mugs in a single cycle, knowing exactly what color each one will be. It's the industrial model of ceramics — efficient, scalable, and utterly predictable. For everyday tableware, it's entirely appropriate.

Why Collectors Care

Here's the crucial distinction: a fake 'Jian Zhan style' cup is almost always oxidation-fired. Its 'oil spots' are chemical stains or printed decals, applied to a predictable brown or black base. A genuine Jian Zhan — with metallic crystals that genuinely reflect light — requires reduction firing, which can never be batch-predictable. When you see a 'Jian Zhan' priced at $15 with perfectly uniform spots, you are looking at oxidation-fired industrial ware.
