Step 1: Understand the Tiers
Jian Zhan pricing isn't arbitrary. The tiers reflect firing complexity and survival rate: entry pieces ($25-59) showcase the craft; advanced pieces ($89-129) achieve true crystalline mastery; master pieces ($179+) represent the rare, the gilded, the signed. Step 2: Start with One Good Cup
Don't buy ten cheap cups. Buy one quality piece you genuinely love — an authentic iron-clay Jian Zhan in a classic shape. Use it daily. Learn its glaze, its weight, its behavior with your favorite tea. This single cup will teach you more than any reading.
Step 3: Learn to Identify
Before your second purchase, master the fundamentals: the half-glaze foot, the weight test, the three-dimensional crystals. Our authentication guide gives you the four tests. A collector who can identify a fake at a glance will never overpay.
Step 4: Grow by Theme
Grow your collection deliberately. Collect by glaze (all oil spots), by shape (all Shukou), or by series (all Celestial). Thematic collections are more satisfying — and more valuable. Each new piece should add a dimension, not a duplicate.

Keep records: studio, batch, date, price, provenance certificate. Good documentation transforms a hobby collection into a legacy — and is essential if you ever choose to sell.
