How to Tell if Your Jian Zhan Is Real: 4 Test Methods

Short answer: test four things — weight, the unglazed foot, the dimensional crystals, and the tea taste. Genuine Jian Zhan is heavy, half-glazed at the foot, has three-dimensional crystals, and measurably softens tea.

Test 1: The Weight Test

Pick the cup up. A genuine iron-clay Jian Zhan is noticeably heavier than a porcelain cup of the same size — it should feel almost stone-like. Light, thin cups are industrial clay with a sprayed-on dark glaze.

Test 2: The Half-Glaze Test

Flip it over. The lower third and foot ring should be unglazed, showing raw iron-rich clay — reddish-brown to charcoal, matte and slightly rough. A fully glazed bottom (including the foot) means mold-casting, not artisan hand-finishing.

Test 3: The Crystal-Depth Test

Run your fingernail across the oil spots or crystalline areas. Genuine crystals sit above the dark ground glaze — three-dimensional, catching light from the side. Fake spots are flat, printed, or chemically stained, uniform in size and spacing.

Test 4: The Tea-Taste Test

Brew the same tea in your cup and in an ordinary mug. Wait two minutes. Sip both. The genuine cup's iron body softens the water, rounding out bitterness. A fake tastes identical to a regular mug.

Pass all four? It's authentic. Fail any? You may own an imitation. Every Porcelainess piece passes all four — guaranteed. Read the full guide →
