Iron Oxide: The Pigment of a Thousand Hues

One mineral, a thousand colors. Iron oxide — the same rust that browns an old nail — is responsible for some of the most celebrated surfaces in ceramic history: the midnight black of Jian Zhan, the jade green of celadon, the amber of tenmoku, and the shimmering crystals of oil-spot glaze.

The Chameleon

Iron's genius is that its final color depends entirely on its environment. Under oxidation firing, iron produces browns, ambers, and rust reds. Under reduction, it yields greens, greys, and blacks. Combined with titanium it shifts toward yellows and golds; with manganese, toward purples. The same mineral, treated differently, becomes an entirely different palette. This is why the glaze world reveres iron: it is the most versatile colorant in the ceramicist's kit.

The Jian Zhan Connection

In Jian Zhan, the high iron content of the glaze (up to 8-10%) is what makes the signature effects possible. During reduction firing, the iron crystallizes into metallic spots and streaks — the 'oil spots' and 'hare's fur' that collectors prize. The deep black ground is itself iron at maximum saturation. A cup that looks simply 'black' to a novice is, to a collector, a field of iron chemistry frozen mid-reaction.

Why Authenticity Matters

Industrial fakes can't use real iron chemistry cheaply — so they use synthetic stains that mimic the look without the depth. Hold a fake next to a genuine piece and the difference is immediate: the genuine cup's surface shifts and shimmers as you move it, because real iron crystals genuinely reflect light at different angles.
