Reduction Firing: The Heart of Jian Zhan Magic

Every Jian Zhan collector eventually asks the same question: how do those shimmering oil spots and iridescent crystals form? The answer lives in a process called reduction firing — and it is the single most important variable separating genuine Jian ware from every imitation on the market.

What Is Reduction Firing?

In an oxidation kiln, oxygen flows freely, and the glaze fires predictably to a uniform color. In a reduction kiln, the artisan deliberately restricts oxygen flow at key moments. The flames become starved of oxygen, and the fire is forced to 'steal' oxygen from the glaze itself — pulling oxygen molecules out of the iron oxides suspended within it.

The Iron Moment

At approximately 1300°C, this oxygen theft triggers a violent chemical reaction. The iron oxides in the glaze decompose, and iron atoms are pushed to the surface. As the kiln cools, these iron atoms cluster and crystallize — forming the metallic 'oil spots' or 'hare's fur' streaks that define the glaze family. Without the reduction atmosphere, the glaze would fire to a flat, lifeless brown.

Why It's So Difficult

Reduction firing is a knife-edge balancing act. Add too much oxygen and the iron never crystallizes. Cut oxygen too aggressively and the glaze turns soot-black, losing all depth. The artisan reads the kiln's interior through a tiny spy-hole, adjusting the damper by millimeters, guided entirely by the color of the flame and decades of intuition. A single misjudged hour can ruin an entire kiln load.
