Wood Firing: Where Ash Becomes Glaze

Before coal, before gas, before electricity — there was wood. And in the long traditions of both Chinese and Japanese ceramics, wood firing produced some of the most beautiful and unrepeatable surfaces ever achieved by human hands.

How It Works

In a wood-fired kiln, the firebox burns pine or other resinous wood for days on end. The flames carry fine particles of wood ash up through the kiln chamber. At temperatures above 1200°C, that ash melts onto the surface of the pots, fusing with the clay body to form a natural glass coating. Where the ash lands thickly, you get pools of glossy green or amber; where it lands thinly, you get a matte, sandy texture.

The Gift of Unpredictability

Unlike a controlled electric kiln, a wood kiln is alive. The fire surges and rests. The ash flies in uneven clouds. Drafts shift with the weather outside. This means no two wood-fired pieces are ever the same — not just in pattern, but in the very chemistry of their surface. The 'ice-crack' pieces in our collection, with their intricate networks of crystalline fissures, owe their character entirely to this chaotic process.

Why It's Rare

Wood firing is expensive: days of fuel, constant supervision, and a high failure rate. A modern electric kiln can fire a batch overnight; a wood kiln demands a team and a multi-day vigil. Studios that still wood-fire do it for the love of the unpredictable result — and collectors pay a premium for the privilege.
